Today's Reflection (Ayah 31-33, Surah Al-Baqarah)

And He taught Adam the names, all of them; then he presented them to the angels, and said, “Tell Me the names of these, if you are sincere. (Quran 2:31)

قَالُوا سُبْحَانَكَ لَا عِلْمَ لَنَا إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمْتَنَا ۖ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَلِيمُ الْحَكِيمُ

They said, “Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. It is you who are the Knowledgeable, the Wise.”(Quran 2:32)

He said, “O Adam, tell them their names.” And when he told them their names, He said, “Did I not tell you that I know the secrets of the heavens and the earth, and that I know what you reveal and what you conceal?” (Quran 2:33)

In this ayah Allah explains to us how we are superior to all the other creations of Allah. This ayah should make us tremble in gratitude. Gratitude to be blessed with knowledge of everything in this world. Allah mentions that he taught Adam (as) (and not the angels) all the names and then presented it to the angels and asked them if they could tell the names of all of these and they couldn't, All they said was we do not have any knowledge except what you have given us. Here the angels are praising Allah's holiness, and perfection above every kind of deficiency, affirming that no creature could ever acquire any part of Allah's knowledge, except by his permission, nor could know anything except what Allah teaches them.Modern linguists say that all the languages are derived from the nouns (in other words names).Do we not see the wisdom behind Allah teaching the names to Adam (A.s)?

Any subject you study, everything boils down to the vocabulary, the glossary i.e the different kinds of names...SubhanAllah so all the knowledge we posses in this duniya be it in any field is granted to us by Allah. We feel so proud of our selves or our children when someone appreciates our intelligence, instead what should we be doing? The praise should make us humble and realize that everything is from Allah alone and also we have been given much more knowledge than any other of his creations and so we have much more responsibility. As mentioned in the Quran:

And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference. (17:70)

Indeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds - those are the best of creatures. (98: 7)

“Therefore when I have properly fashioned him and breathed into him a chosen noble soul from Myself, fall down before him in prostration.” (29) Therefore all the angels, each and every one of them, fell prostrate. (30) Except Iblis (Satan); he refused to be among those who prostrated. (31) Sura Al-Hijir (15: 29-31)

And we, as such noble creatures, what are we created for? To prostate to Allah in submission. When we realize that He alone is our Creator and the Creator of the heavens and the earth we should submit to Him completely, every action of ours should reflect His excellence, His magnitude and His supremacy. This knowledge is given to us with a great responsibility to spread it to people who do not posses and by the will of Allah the receiver of knowledge will be guided and the giver will be rewarded. InshaAllah.
