The companion who is the best to Allah is the best to his companion and the neighbor who is the best to Allah is the best to his neighbor.
βThe companion who is the best to Allah is the best to his companion and the neighbor who is the best to Allah is the best to his neighborβ
Sahih Muslim
Islam is such a beautiful religion, the more we study about it the more we feel blessed. Alhumdullilah. In this Hadith our Prophet Mohammed (SAWS) tells us how important it is for us to be the best with our companions and neighbors, as it will be considered as if we are the best in behavior toward Allah.
Our companions can be any one, our spouse, our siblings, our work mates, our traveling companions etc , any person with whom you spend time with. In our day to day life we meet different kinds of people, some times you are not the one who choose your companion but still you will have to spend hours or days with them, they may or may not have the same values, thoughts, manner etc. but the hadith tells us that we have to put our differences apart and be the best towards them.
What does it mean by being the best toward them? It is to ignore their short comings and treat them with respect, communicate with wisdom, donβt use hurtful words, gift them, share your food, remind each other of good and most important thing is that wish for khair for each other. Wishing good ( Khair ) for them also means not being jealous of anything they posses or their success. As is also mentioned in the hadith:
βNone of you truly believe until, you love for your brother what you love for yourselfβ
So we should always make dua to Allah and seek good companions in life as they have a big impact on our character. It is our human tendency to imitate our companions. There is also an old saying that goes βDo not ask about a person and ask about his friend for each person imitates his friendβ. So a good companion will pass on his good character to his friend and a bad companion will spread his mischievous behavior to his friend. Are we then not supposed to search for good companions and try to be one to our friends?
There is a beautiful hadith which explains this with an example:
The example of a good companion (who sits with you) in comparison with a bad one, is I like that of the musk seller and the blacksmith's bellows (or furnace);from the first you would either buy musk or enjoy its good smell while the bellows would either burn your clothes or your house, or you get a bad nasty smell thereof." [Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim].
And the second part of our todays hadith refers to being the best to ones neighbors. In todayβs generation we are so busy that we often overlook and ignore our neighbors as if they do not concern us. Being kind to ones neighbors is given a lot of importance in our religion as we can see through numerous hadith:
"By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer.ββ It was asked, "Who is that, O Messenger of Allah?ββ He said, "One whose neighbour does not feel safe from his evil" (Sahih Bukhari).
" He is not a believer who eats his fill whilst his neighbour beside him goes hungry" (Bukhari).
"Angel Jibril advised me continuously to take care of the neighbor till I thought that Allah is to make him an inheritor."
Being aware of who our neighbor is and being friendly and kinβs is not enough when it comes to fulfilling the rights our our neighbors. It means to help take care of our community as a whole, that includes the less privileged neighbors also. A few of the rights of our neighbors are as follows:
β’ Exchanging greetings
β’ Help them in need
β’ Monetary help if they need a loan
β’ Speak kind words
β’ Share your food
β’ Visit them when they are sick
β’ Attend their funeral
β’ Give gifts and respect their gifts.
β’ Ensure their safety especially if they are old.
Now that we have learned the rights of our neighbors ,let us try to implement it in our lives. Visit your neighbor today, share food and gifts and experience the feeling of content in your heart.
May Allah grant us righteous companions and neighbors.
