Today's Reflection [Ayah 16-17, Surah Baqarah]
These are the ones who have purchased error in exchange for guidance. This bargain has brought them no profit and certainly they are not on the Right Way.(2:16)
(2:17) They are like him who kindled a fire, and when it lit up all around him, Allah took away the light (of their perception) and left them in utter darkness where they can see nothing.

In today's era, it is very common for people to exchange their innocence and truthful nature for fame, status, power and money. Everything that is temporary is bought in this world that cannot be benefitted by us in any way whatsoever in the hereafter. The reason people exchange the truth for falsehood or guidance for error is because is they ae primarily driven by their desires. The worldly desires that the shaytaan decides to take hold of and convert into absolute atheism. A secular nation that has no deen or dunya. Only concerned about power ,wealth and fame. Moral values don't have any place in such a setup. Allah says they have bargained and sold their souls to the devil with no profit. Why? Because the wise one understands that the real profit is something that lasts. Something that is permanent. Something that doesn't fade. The only permanent benefit is Jannah. And those who purchase misguidance can never attain Jannah (Paradise).
Allah then explains this process with an example. The example of those who light a fire and once it has lit all around and given him the light needed to see his surroundings (the truth), but Allah takes away their light (their ability to perceive and understand right from wrong) and leaves them completely lost and in darkness. There are people who become muslims , just to pursue their worldly interests. Hypocrites that use the deen to enhance their presence in this duniya, this is the first ayah. Just like how during the time of Prophet SAWS , some people became Muslims to extract the secrets of the Muslims and their armies and plans in order to spoil their plot and just like how the Khilafat fell after the infiltration of hypocrite Muslims that were used to bring down the Ummah, today we see many people giving up the deen in order to avoid trials. Women give up modest dressing, Men give up going to the masjid and so on so forth. In the west it is a trial to walk like a Muslim women and yet after receiving guidance some of them decide to remove their Hijab due to trial. This is the parable that Allah has explained in the second ayah. He guides them towards the truth, but because their faith is weak , they decide not to expose themselves to any hardships by following the deen, because they failed to hold on to that guidance , Allah leaves them in utter darkness.
