Know well that your belongings and your children are but a trial, and that with Allah there is a mighty reward.
Know well that your belongings and your children are but a trial, and that with Allah there is a mighty reward. (8:28)
Islam always advocates for a balance when it comes to the worldly pleasures. We need to be aware upto what extent we can indulge in these pleasures so that it does not drive us away from our main goal. The main purpose of man's creation was for worship, as Allah mentions in Surah Adh-Dhariyat
I created the jinn and humankind only that they might worship Me. (51:56)
No one else has created everything in the universe except Allah, and hence he alone deserves worship. Therefore we as muslims should remind ourselves of our main purpose which is to attain the hereafter and not indulge excessively in attaining the pleasures of this world. Anyone who occupies himself with showing off or achieving wealth of children just to gain some fame or status in this world is definitely going to misguide himself from the real purpose of worship and also go astray, getting involved in the unlawful.
Allah tells us that our properties and children will be a cause for us to be tested. We need to hold steadfast to the deen and realize that they are not but a trial that can either move us away from our Rabb or closer to him. The way we utilize these blessings is what helps us gain the everlasting hereafter. Utilize them to earn Allah's pleasure, even if it is something as small as a spoon, utilizing the spoon to feed our children is another form of Ibadah(worship).
Allah also reminds us again in another part of the Quran , Surah Munafiqoon,
‘O you who believe, let not your properties or your children divert you from the Remembrance of Allaah. And whosoever does that, they are the losers.’ [63: 9]
Neither our children nor our spouses or the wealth we possess will take our share of punishment in the hereafter . We can spend all our time in taking care of our wealth and children and forget the one who created us and gave us these blessings, but there will only be doom and gloom in doing so. The only way we can gain Allah's pleasure even through these trials is by obeying his commands with regards to attaining wealth and having children, and following the Sunnah. The Sunnah teaches us that our beloved Prophet SAWS always kept a balance between his family and the rights of his people and all other aspects of life, which is a prime teaching of the deen. Children are a source of fitnah – they are a trial and a test. So we should fear Allaah with regard to them and give them the proper rights , and the most important right they have upon us is that we teach them the deen and give them a righteous upbringing. That we raise them to be children that are responsible and pious.
The Messenger of Allaah (SAWS) has instructed us how to expiate this fitnah. Hudhaifah ( RA) reported: “We were sitting one day with ‘Umar ( RA) when he asked us: ‘Which one of you memorized the words of Allaah’s Messenger (SAWS) concerning trials?’ I replied: ‘I did, just as he (SAWS ) said it.’ He said: ‘You are quick to respond!!’ I said:‘A man’s trials with regard to his family, his wealth, his children and his neighbor are expiated by prayer, fasting, charity, and commanding (good) and forbidding (evil).’(Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)
In another ayah in Surah Taghabun Allah mentions the same thing
Your possessions and your offspring are nothing but a trial for you. And there awaits a great reward for you with Allah. (64:15)
If we save ourselves from the temptations of worldly possessions and children and succeed in keeping our love for them subject to the love of Allah, then Allah will reward us immensely.
Time and again Allah is reminding us with his verses that Children and Wealth have only been made beautiful to us like a test and it is a natural inclination of man to be attracted to these things. But the attraction needs to be kept under control by our nafs and these ayahs should remind us that good deeds and Allah's mercy alone will help us enter Jannah.
Men are naturally tempted by the lure of women, children, treasures of gold and silver, horses of mark, cattle and plantations. These are the enjoyments in the life of this world; but with Allah lies a goodly abode to return to. (3:14)
Wealth and children are an adornment of the life of the world. But the deeds of lasting righteousness are the best in the sight of your Lord in reward, and far better a source of hope. (18:46)
Whilst wealth is needed to sustain our life and children are naturally desired by man , it is important to reflect on these needs and constantly check ourselves if we are going overboard and indulging in taking care of them excessively that we miss Salah, or we don't observe fasting in the name of work. These are the core pillars of Islam which shouldn't be ignored no matter what.
