Speak to him gently, perhaps he may take heed or fear (Allah).
فَقُوۡلَا لَهٗ قَوۡلًا لَّيِّنًا لَّعَلَّهٗ يَتَذَكَّرُ اَوۡ يَخۡشٰ
Quran (20:44)
And speak to him gently, perhaps he may take heed or fear (Allah)."
SubhanAllah, this ayah is a part of a dialogue between Musa (AS) and Allah (SWT). When Allah commanded Musa (AS) to go to Pharaoh of Egypt and invite him to obedience to Allah.
There is no doubt in the fact that Pharoah was an oppressive tyrant. Yet in this ayah Allah commands Musa (AS) to speak to the most arrogant of people in a gentle way.
This ayah contains a great lesson for us. The method of speech being used here to invite even the most arrogant ones is gentle soft and easy speech.
If we need ourselves to be able to accept advise we need to be spoken to gently. This is a divine guidance from our Creator. He created us and hence He knows what is the best way to propagate his deen to us. It is through gentle speech. Through mercy and kindness. There is no attraction for anyone who yells or screams in anger in his speech.
If Musa (AS) was asked to speak to an all time tyrant and oppressor in a gentle way then imagine how we speak to some of our loved ones such as our parents , siblings or our spouses.
Rasool SAWS has advised us to speak good or remain silent. Also speaking a good word in itself is a charity. (Sahih Bukhari)
In another ayah (Quran 17: 23) Allah guides us to speak graciously, to speak only noble words to our parents.
How many times we have spoken rudely to someone close to us? How many times have we spoken without considering the opposite person's feelings? How many times have we disregarded the feelings of our children when we speak to them, although they have hearts just like us.
We have a tongue that needs to be moist with the remembrance of Allah so that our hearts may be softened and put to rest. A soft heart makes us speak softly and gently. It makes us have care, concern and compassion for others. Reading and studying the Quran helps us soften our hearts as well.
Speaking kindly is an act of worship that Allah loves. Next time we raise our voice, we need to remind ourselves of this ayah and control our tongue.
