So, whoever does an atoms weight of good shall see it.
مَنۡ يَّعۡمَلۡ مِثۡقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيۡرًا يَّرَه
Quran 99:7
So, whoever does an atoms weight of good shall see it.
This is an ayah which is straight forward in its meaning. Whoever does the smallest deed of good shall have it recorded in his book of deeds and the Hisaab(account) is with Allah. No person will be left without their share of reward for whatever good they do. Even if it is as tiny as an atom. It motivates man to do good in order to accumulate his account in the hereafter. The way we are always thinking of the dunya and how to protect our future through savings, a good home or a good ride, children’s education etc. similarly we are asked to take care of our permanent account with Allah that will be raised on the day of judgement by doing any good deed. Even if it means removing a thorn from someone's path.
Rasool (SAWS) has advised us to save ourselves from the fire even if it means to give half a date fruit in charity or saying a good pleasant word. (Sahih Bukhari)
Never underestimate the worth of any small good deed. Never undervalue deeds that may look simple. Never belittle another person’s efforts or deeds. It does not have to be a massive amount of wealth given in donation to the poor, it doesn’t even have to be wealth always. It could be anything. Your skills, time, effort, talent, intellectual ability etc.
Islam is the deen of compassion and mercy. Allah rewards even an atoms weight of good.
How small is a particle of dust that floats in the sunlight? Have you thought about how small an atom is?
We need a microscope with layers to be able to see it. Then imagine getting rewarded even for something as tiny as that. This must automatically teach us to always enjoin good even if it is not significantly big because it is big in Allah's sight.
We need to have the intention of being rewarded by Allah when we perform any good deed by keeping this ayah in mind, so every single action can be turned into Ibadah (an act of worship).
Remember, a prostitute was forgiven by Allah for feeding a thirsty dog (Sahih Muslim, Sahih Bukhari, 3143), then what about feeding the muslims who are in need?
Remember that a man earned Allah's pleasure and forgiveness just by removing a thorny branch on his way. (Sahih Bukhari 652,653,654)
Remember that a businessman who had nothing good to show in his hisaab was forgiven due to his leniency in relieving the debts of those in hardship (Sahih Muslim, 1561).
Remember that the man who committed 99 murders was granted Allah’s mercy through his single sincere action of repentance and reform. (Sahih Bukhari 676).
Remember the story of the man who sinned and when death approached him, he asked his body to be pulverized and scattered to the winds after his death so that Allah wouldn’t resurrect him. But when he stood before Allah, and was asked what made him do that, he said fear of Allah made him do it and Allah forgave him for that. (Sahih Bukhari 7067).
Hence in all of these examples we learn that even the tiniest good deeds such as feeding water to an animal or sincerity in one’s repentance or even true fear (taqwa) of Allah led people to gain Allah's mercy.
We cannot reduce the value of anyone’s good deeds by commenting on them negatively because of their past or their sins and neither can we devalue our own good deeds because of our past or our sins. It is Allah who decides. As he promised,
So, whoever does an atoms weight of good shall see it. Quran (99:7).
