Today's Reflection [Ayah 60 , Surah Al- Baqarah]
And recall when Moses prayed for water for his people. We said, “Strike the rock with your staff.” Thereupon twelve springs gushed out from it, and each tribe recognized its drinking-place. “Eat and drink from God’s provision, and do not corrupt the earth with disobedience. (Quran 2:60)
Allah then mentions another favour of Allah for the Bani Israel. When Musa AS asked Allah for water the word Istiska is used and the words istighfar, istiska is specifically used only when we ask Allah, in arabic literature. If we are seeking forgiveness from others then other words are used.
So when Musa AS asked for water or rain for his nation, Allah asks him to strike his staff and the staff which Musa AS has is a special staff which Allah has given abilities. When Musa AS strikes the staff on the boulder 12 springs gushed forth, because there were 12 tribes of Bani Israel. Allah knew water can become a serious point for conflict and he provided them abundantly with 12 different springs. But what we need to notice is that this Surah Aa'raf this same incident is mentioned again. Allah mentions the great favours upon Bani Israel throughout this Surah.
Allah says then dont go around in the land causing corruption , specifically corruption of the mind based on false assumptions is what is being discussed. Because when Musa AS was absent a lot of corruption was done in their minds which led them to worshipping the calf. Basically propaganda that corrupts your mind and then we end up doing things that are false or corrupt. Now a days we see a lot of propaganda about different topics over the news and social media that corrupts our minds and makes us thing what is good as bad and what is bad as good. This is true fasaad. And the ones who get corrupted usually go around causing fasaad even to their surroundings, its a vicious circle that doesn't end well.
In this warning Allah has given to Bani Israel is very strong and powerful message. A specific kind of corruption is being discussed and we understand that when we become corrupt we tend to infect our surroundings and our community with the same mind set and go around normalizing issues that need attention or need to be addressed with concern as something very casual, for example the passing of LGBT laws in the western world. The leaders become corrupt, which is the worst as they have a severe impact on their nation and the corruption spread fast from the top to bottom.
