Detach yourself from the world and Allah will love you. Detach yourself from what people possess and they will love you.

On the authority of Abi al-β€˜Abbas Sahl bin Sa’d al-Sa’idi (RadhiyAllahu β€˜anhu) who said: A man came to the Prophet (SallaAllahu β€˜alayhi wasallam) and said: β€œO Messenger of Allah, direct me to an act which if I do it, [will cause] Allah to love me and people to love me.” He, sallaAllahu β€˜alayhi wasallam, answered: β€œDetach yourself from the world and Allah will love you. Detach yourself from what people possess and they will love you.”

(A hasan hadith reported by Ibn Majah and others with good chains of narration)

This hadith describes the life of an ideal muslim. It does not renounce the blessings of enjoying the dunya. But it teaches us to not be attached to the things of the dunya. If we constantly see ourselves attached to something of the dunya be it our wealth, family or wordly posessions or status , fame then we need to give ourself a realitu check.

We tend to be attached to praises these days due to excessive display of our life events and blessings over social media. If we can equally take criticism in a healthy way then that means we are not attached to praises alone.

If we are in a state of despair and then we still have our heart attached to Allah and not just when we are enjoying peaceful times, it means we are not attached to the dunya. While this is hard to implement , it is vital to practice this in our life to be able to attain that level of Imaan where we can have an unwavering heart during times of calamity and happyiness. Also we need to constantly beseech Allah for keeping our heart firm and steadfast in our faith.

If we keep Allah and his messenger (saws) above all other worldy desires and detach our hearts from worldly pursuits we will please our Rabb which will ease our ways in the dunya. This hadith makes us realise that what is with Allah is better than what is in the dunya.

Hassan Al Basri said "It is from the weakness of Imaan , that we think what we are holding in our hands is more secure and valuable than what Allah has for us"

Isnt it a strange thing that we struggle all our life to secure our future in the dunya but we do not put in half of that effort to secure our aakhirah. Our future is uncertain while death is certain, yet man is busy in the life of the dunya.

Whoever has a heart that is not attached to the dunya will automatically be content with the way Allah has decreed his affairs for him. The life of this dunya is a lowly life , we can strive to be close and have the best of the dunya and yet not gain it without Allahs will, whereas if our heart is attached to Allah and we put in maximum effort to please him then he will provide for us in this world and hereafter.
